"Sebab upah dosa ialah maut; tetapi karunia Allah ialah hidup yang kekal dalam Kristus Yesus, Tuhan kita." (Roma 6:23).
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23).
I love the way the bible describes death as the wages of sin. What does it mean?
Let's take a look at the word wage. Why does the bible use the term "wage"? Why not punishment, why not result or why not payment? Why wage. I used to learn about the difference between the word wage and salary. Both seem to have the same meaning but they differ in the way they're obtained. Salary is what we get at the end of the month/beginning of the next month after doing a certain work, while wage is what we get right away after doing a certain work. In relation to sin, death is what we get right away after sinning. It won't wait till you die, it comes to you right away when you sin. What is death anyway? Death is not being lifeless only, its not all. Death is more than that. What the bible says about it? God is holy so we as His children must be holy. We are to be holy as we are the temple of the Holy God. What happen when the temple is desecrated? God won't be dwelling there. So death means separation with God.
What God said to Adam in Genesis?
"But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." (Genesis 2:17).
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they were casted out of Eden and lose their fellowship and relationship with God. Men couldn't come to God by themselves because of their sin of disobedience. See, when we sin we are separated with God. Jesus said "Apart of me you can do nothing!" That's death - Separation.
This answers one of the most controversional questions "why are there sufferings in this world?" Its because of sin. It gives us the answer as well, we know sin is the cause but we know Christ is the cure.
I'm not saying things are going to be easy if we receive Christ. Don't get me wrongly, because the joy we have in Him is much greater than the suffering we have in this life. Besides, isn't He the one who says : I will never leave you nor forsake you?
So death won't wait till you die.
We will see what the bible says about life in my next post.
May the Lord bless you.
